Mr. Komi S. Klu is a well sought-after multi-lingual speaker and well-respected Financial Services Executive with over 20 years of proven success in driving operational efficiencies and spearheading efforts to prevent and mitigate reputational, financial and operational risks for large global financial institutions, including Capital One Finance and HSBC.
Concurrently, as Chief Risk Officer of EMIGROUP, Komi is providing leadership and consulting services, assisting African organizations in building solutions for large scale, complex business challenges in support of risk management strategies. In addition, Komi is currently assisting Sub Saharan African and global financial and insurance companies become efficient, well managed, and compliant with international legal requirements, including anti-money laundering regulations.
Komi has held management positions overseeing governance, risk management, and claims processing operations for the Debt Protection Operations of Capital One Finance (Wilmington, DE). Prior to joining Capital One, Komi held key management positions during his 12 years with HSBC Insurance Services (Bridgewater, NJ), a subsidiary of HSBC Group, one of the world’s largest banking and financial services organizations with an international network throughout Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa. As Vice President of Operations and head of Bancassurance Risk for North America at HSBC, he led and developed a high-performing team of 60 managers and employees, and managed risk for a portfolio of 12.5 million accounts, saving the bank multi-million dollars from potentially fraudulent activities.
Prior to his VP role, Komi had oversight for multi-lingual Customer Service Call Centers in the United States and India and was successful in the design and execution of global business process outsourcing initiatives, saving HSBC nearly $2 million.
Significant accomplishments include:
- Komi is a frequent speaker for organizations such as the GIA (Ghana Insurers Association) ISACA (Information Systems Audit and Control Association), PAD (Partners for Africa’s Development) and CAN (Canada African Network)
- With GIA, he is currently working on solutions to increase insurance penetration in Ghana by improving customer experience from sales to claim.
- Komi leveraged his Lean Agile expertise to build an agile workforce and culture, reengineer operational processes, and build a controls framework which resulted in exemplary regulatory and internal audit results.
- Komi is currently the President and Chief Risk Officer of EMIGROUP (Accra, Ghana), where he has been instrumental as both an executive and consultant in facilitating numerous business deals, identifying and preventing fraudulent financial activities in Sub Saharan Africa.
- Komi is also a visiting lecturer for some West African universities including the University of Lomé Law School. He is also a professor of Business and entrepreneurship for West Francophone Africa for Planet Startup ( http://www.planetstartup.org/) a program designed to leverage entrepreneurship to combat youth unemployment.
Komi was educated in the United States and Europe, holding graduate degrees in Human Resources Management from Widener University in Chester, PA; a Post-Master’s Degree in Business and Private Law from Bordeaux University, in Bordeaux, France. His professional credentials include: Certificate in Managing Complex Programs from Stanford University; Certified Scrum Master and Scrum Product Owner from the Scrum Alliance; and Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI, the highest designation of Global FLMI Society which is well respected across the global insurance industry). Komi is also member of the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP), as well as, the African Financial Professionals network and holds multiple additional certifications in the insurance industry. Komi also serves on the board of financial and international organizations across North America and Africa.
