Shakira Motan is the Trade Commissioner at the South African Consulate General in Chicago. She holds an honors degree in International and Development Economics and has almost two decades of experience in international trade and investment promotion.

Ms. Motan has previously served at the Embassy of South Africa in the United Arab Emirates, as well as managed the Asia East and Middle East Export Promotion desks at Trade and Investment South Africa, a division of the South African Department of Trade and Industry.

Ms. Motan has project led large scale BRICS projects, as well the annual South African Expos in China, covering Beijing, Shanghai and Xiamen. She has worked in markets such as China, Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, the Gulf states, the Levant, and Turkey. Ms. Motan has previously led trade promotion delegations of South African companies in the Energy, Healthcare, Defence, IT, Infrastructure and Agroprocessing sectors.

Her current responsibilities include the promotion of South African goods and services as well as attracting foreign direct investment to South Africa, in both the Midwest and West Coast.
